In preparation for the dedication of Temple Sinai’s renovated education space in 2019, students were asked to find descriptive words reflecting the wisdom of Pirkei Avot (4:1): “Eizeh hu chacham? Halomed mikol adam – Who is wise? The person who learns from everyone.” The selected words and sentiments are visible through the beautiful mosaic of glass beads which adorn the corner of the education wing as part of this artistic “tree of knowledge.” Its placement on two walls, such that it is visible as one enters or exits, is symbolic of the fact that learning can not only occur in a classroom but also out in the wider world as well, whenever we appreciate that there is wisdom to be gained in each and every encounter.

Reflection from Michelle Young:

As you turn the corner into Sinai’s education hallway, the Mosaic Tree greets you — vibrant, rooted, and alive with color and meaning. Created in 2019 from clay, wood, and glass beads, each leaf and tile on this “Who Is Wise?” Tree is personal, adorned with handwritten reflections inspired by the text from Pirkei Avot: “Who is wise? One who learns from everyone.”  The students’ words, which were gathered before the dedication of our renovated education space, shimmer throughout the mosaic — reminders that wisdom lives in every encounter. Spanning two walls, the tree is visible both entering and leaving, symbolizing that learning happens in classrooms and in the world beyond.

Look out a nearby window, and you might glimpse a smiling student, newly curious about Judaism. This tree is a symbol of their journey — rooted in tradition, lifted by wonder. A true tree of life to those who hold fast to it.
