Pirkei Avot 2:1: Be as careful in observance of a minor commandment as in a major commandment, because you don't know the respective rewards for the commandments
Interpreted by Phyllis and Michael Weiser
We perform mitzvot because we believe that Judaism is a religion of action. The more mitzvot we do consciously and regularly the more that habituation occurs and the performance becomes easier, even automatic. In the event of habituation one may have to focus for a period of time in order to feel the spiritual connection. When we give thought to those behaviors that seem automic, we add a spiritual deminsions to our actions. Thus, the rabbis were correct! Focus on actions as belief follows actions.
