Growth Begins in Discomfort

Life is filled with moments when we feel inadequate, uncertain, or overwhelmed by the tasks in front of us. Whether it’s navigating a career change, mending a relationship, or simply trying to make it through the day, we all encounter times when we doubt our ability to rise to the challenge.

In Parashat Vaera, Moses is tasked with leading an entire nation to freedom. But he doesn’t begin as a confident leader. He questions his own abilities, pointing to his speech impediment and pleading with God to choose someone else. Yet, despite Moses’s doubts, he steps forward, one faltering foot at a time, and begins the work of transformation.

This story isn’t just about Moses or even about faith. It’s about the universal truth that growth often begins in discomfort. The moments when we feel least prepared are often the ones that teach us the most. The Torah reminds us that we don’t have to be perfect to begin. We just have to begin.

What a profound message for each of us as well as we consider the challenges we are facing. What would it look like to take the first step, even if it feels small or imperfect? Vaera teaches us that transformation is a process—it unfolds one step, one choice at a time. And taking those steps is the only chance we have to discover strengths we didn’t know we had.

Shabbat Shalom.
