Be a Modern-Day Noah
10/28/2024 12:42:40 PM
In our Torah portion this week, we encounter Noah and the ark that he built to preserve life. It’s a great story that resonates with kids who imagine large boats with smiling animals of all shapes and sizes. It is a story that should resonate with adults as well, for in the words of the portion comes a challenge to us all. Though the rainbow comes along to symbolize that God will never again destroy the world with a flood, I believe that Noah was not the last “ark builder” – in fact, I think that task falls to each and every one of us, especially if you consider that building an ark does not need to include hundreds of cubits of wood.
Let me highlight two ways, each taking place over the next week, that you can build an ark.
Idea #1: Recycle Electronics
Noah, like each of us today, was tasked with being a steward of creation. The entire saga powerfully speaks to us today regarding our responsibilities toward the environment, particularly in the realm of electronics recycling. We are inundated with technology in our modern lives, and with that comes a significant challenge: e-waste. Those old devices sitting in our homes can harm our planet if not disposed of properly. Just as Noah cared for each creature aboard his ark, we must take intentional steps to safeguard our environment. By recycling electronics responsibly, we honor the beauty of creation and the interconnectedness of all life. How great that Temple Sinai is holding an electronics recycling drive this Sunday between 8:30 am and 1:00 pm. Idea #2: Vote, and Behave Kindly on Election Day and the Days that Follow
Both we today and Noah from this ancient story share a sense of duty. Noah doesn’t just save his family; he saves the animals, too, recognizing the interconnectedness of all life. Similarly, when we vote, we’re not just casting a ballot for ourselves; we’re considering the well-being of our entire community, the values we hold dear, and the legacy we wish to create. If you have not yet done so, please take the time to vote on Tuesday. And, regardless of the outcome of the electorate, may we each choose to uphold the value of Shalom in our dealings with those who had hoped for a different outcome. Go HERE to find out your polling location.
In the spirit of Noah, let’s devote some time this week to building an ark of hope and action, ensuring that the world we leave behind reflects our highest aspirations. It’s our moment to make a difference, grounded in purpose and guided by our shared values.
With wishes for a Shabbat – and week ahead – filled with Shalom.
