Rabbi Ron Segal

It was last Thursday, only seven days ago, that our community was preparing to gather in support of Israel Bonds and in celebration of Rabbis Sam and Natan Trief together with renowned author and Israeli chef, Adeena Sussman. Conversations about Israel continued the next day at lunch as we welcomed local Israeli-American Amit Mayer to our sukkah for an informative conversation about the current status of proposed changes to Israel’s judiciary. And then came Shabbat… and the world as we knew it for our brothers and sisters in Israel, for those in the Middle East, and truthfully, for all who love and support Israel throughout our country and the world was forever changed.

Who could have imagined experiencing so much pain, grief, shock, despair, anger, and now resolve in one week’s time?!  This week brought thousands of people from throughout our Jewish community and beyond together for a moving and impactful solidarity rally at City Springs. (According to Mayor Rusty Paul, between those gathered in person and those who were streaming, estimated attendance was close to 11,000 people!)  Recognizing the continued desire and need to be together in community at this time in order to offer mutual support, embrace and comfort, we are holding a Shabbat Service of Solidarity with Israel tomorrow evening at 8:00 PM.* All are encouraged to attend and to join us in affirming the strength of our Jewish community and to declare with pride and unshakeable resolve “Am Yisrael Chai – the people of Israel live!”

*Please note that the Consecration Service for our Sinai Kindergarten students will take place during the 6:30 PM service and celebration. Those observing yahrzeit or wishing to share a name for a Mi Shebeirach should plan to attend the 8:00 PM service.

As Temple Sinai continues to stand with Israel, I invite all to listen to the most recent episode of our Seeking Sinai podcast recorded this week, featuring Rabbi Natan Trief in conversation with fellow Sinai member and dual Israeli/American citizen, Yoav Zilber. Asserting that “the world for Israel has changed and that it will truly never be the same again,” Rabbi Natan and Yoav break down some of the vicious events of the past few days, and also share their thoughts about some things we can do to support Israel and each other during these difficult days. You can find Seeking Sinai on Google, Apple or Spotify podcasts.
